VIRGIL ABLOH NAMED HEAD MENSWEAR DESIGNER AT LOUIS VUITTON
Social media erupted when it was announced that Virgil Abloh, founder of Off-White, is the new creative director of the legacy brand Louis Vuitton.
With much ado, many creatives and fans alike, congratulated Mr. Abloh for breaking multiple barriers at once.
With no formal design training, an aesthetic towards streetwear, and a creative distuptor of the best kind, the luxury house has certainly stepped outside of their proverbial box in an effort to respond to the power of culture by giving Abloh the creative reigns.
As I often say, fashion is POWERFUL. Culture is powerful as well and brands that have staying power know the key is to take their cues from it.
This leads to a deeper conversation but certainly underscored my emphatic drive to reach creatives about the business side of fashion. Although Abloh doesn’t have traditional fashion education, he had undeniable access as Kanye West’s creative director and as an “intern” at Fendi. Would it be safe to say that the once closed door of the fashion industry is finally ajar? I think it is. Finally. #timesup
